Admiral Joseph D. Stewart is a retired United States Marine Corps Major General, who after his retirement from the Marine Corps, was appointed as Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

Admiral Stewart’s personal decorations include, but are not limited to: Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior service Medal, Legion of Merit, Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Combat Action Ribbon, Secretary of Transportation Gold Medal.

Upon his retirement from the Superintendent position, Bruce Becker was commissioned by the USMMA to paint his portrait. This painting hangs in the USMMA, Kings Point, New York.
